Flu has become a bit of shorthand in America for illnesses that are more annoying than deadly. But the flu can be fatal. It kills an average of 30,000 Americans every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Worse case Scenario: The CDC has projected that a “medium-level” avian flu pandemic in the United States would cause between 89,000 and 207,000 deaths, an additional 314,000 to 734,000 hospitalizations, and sicken between 20 million and 47 million people. More Vaccines needed, Quarantine implemented.
PREVIOUS FLU PANDEMICS
1918 | "Spanish flu" pandemic. H1N1 virus. The virus killed 20 million to 50 million people worldwide, 500,000 in the U.S.
1957-58 | "Asian flu" pandemic. Virus H2N2. The virus killed 70,000 in U.S. No one younger than 35 is immune to this strain.
1968-69 | "Hong Kong flu." Virus H3N2. The virus killed 34,000 in U.S. This virus still is circulating and kills about 36,000 Americans yearly.
In 1957-1958 the “Asian flu” pandemic killed 70,000 Americans; the “Hong Kong
flu” of 1968-1969 killed 34,000. The worst known pandemic, the “Spanish flu”
pandemic of 1918-1919, killed up to 50 million people worldwide, including
500,000 Americans.
